3, 2, 1... Start!

Despite water and cold, the Oberfeld season has started and we are ready to start working in out two plots. Following the Übergabe and a quick plot inspection, we gathered in the Hofgut Cafe and discussed about how to arrange the large number of plants we have this year in the plot. Here is a brief summary of the ideas for the season.

Social Saturdays

Following the successful experience last year a couple of times, we would like to meet one Saturday every month to work in the Oberfeld together. Here is the list of proposed dates, changes are possible if more people are interested in meeting other day. Add them to your agenda or use the the HFC public calendar (Google Calendar id: hortofunclub@googlemail.com or use this URL)
  • 18th May
  • 8th June
  • 13th July
  • 10th August
  • 14th Septembre
  • 12th October

What to plant

  • Cucumbers instead of Mairübchen. We have decided to remove the Mairübchen in one of the parcels to plant the cucumbers plants instead. The row on the other parcel will be removed in June if more space is needed.
  • More Buschbohnen, little Zückermais, no Essbare Blüten.  We have collected our share of Buschbohnen and Zückermais seeds provided by the Oberfeld to be planted mid May. We will plant only one row of Zückermais (first row of the parcel) instead of two, but instead we will plant three rows of Bohnen as they are very popular. This means removing the Essbare Blüten row.
  • Keep a constant Salad and Radischen flow. Radischen should be replanted as soon as the current ones are gone (Alex has already bought seeds for replanting). Once Spinach are over, Salads can take their place.

Logistics

  • Banana tee for tomatoes worked very well last year. James will take care of bringing it.
  • Poles for the tomatoes should be installed as deep and before planting the tomato plants.
  • We should install the wooden stands for the Markerbsen (still at ESOC) but digging them properly as much as possible in the soil (if possible before the plants are big). More wooden structures can be bough if needed.
  • For the BuschBohnen we should try to build a proper structure for them with poles/ropes or with wooden so they can grow higher and increase the yield. An example (in Spanish but it is self-explanatory): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxNwsCClw3Y
  • There should be a small free area (drop-off point for babies :-)
